How to spend the winter months in Durham Region
If you’re looking for activities to enjoy in and around Durham Region anytime this winter, we have you covered. We’ve gathered a great list of fun winter activities to enjoy, no matter how old your kids are. Staying active in the colder months doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive. We shared some of our favourite ways to stay active outside with your families.
Winter Activities for Babies
Your little bundle of joy may not quite be mobile yet, so this is the perfect time to explore Durham Region outside with your baby. We are big fans of walking trails and paths which are perfect for baby wearing. Heber Down Conservation Park in Whitby is one of our favourites.
I personally love snowshoeing along trails and paths during the winter months and think it is also a great activity for families with little ones who aren’t walking yet. Check out Pingles Farm in Hampton or Lyndebrook Golf Course in Whitby, both are offering a trail experience and rentals too!
If you have your own snowshoes you can make your own trail anywhere!
Another option, for those who prefer to stay warm and dry during the winter months, would be to register for an indoor or online program for moms & babies.
WINTER ACTIVITIES: TODDLERS AND PRESCHOOLERS
When the boys were little they loved being pulled in their sled on the way to the park! When we got to the park they loved to roll around and throw snow. Outdoor activities do not have to cost a lot or take a lot of time. Kids generally enjoying being outdoors in all seasons- so to make sure I was comfy too I made sure to invest in proper clothing that kept me warm and dry. We also had lots of fun in our backyard building snow forts and snowmen.
WINTER ACTIVITIES: SCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN
With your school-aged child, it’s time to pull out the sleds and saucers and hit the toboggan hills around Durham Region. This is always fun with friends and family too. It’s a great excuse to enjoy some hot chocolate together at a local cafe after, or at home where you are comfy and cozy. Some of our favourite spots include:
Pickering
Fairport Beach Public School on Oklahoma Dr
Ajax
Ajax Waterfront (McLarnen & Lake Driveway)
Whitby
Pringle Creek Park
Glen Dhu Public School
Henry Street High School
Oshawa
Grandview South Park
Oshawa Golf Club
Bowmanville
Darlington Provincial Park
If tobogganing is not your cup of tea, then maybe you would prefer to go skating! Pat Bayly Square in Ajax offers Free outdoor skating all winter long. This is a great place for new skaters to practice their skills.
WINTER ACTIVITIES: PRETEENS AND TEENS
This can be the hardest bunch to get motivated to head outdoors for some fresh air and movement, but once they are out- they usually have a good time!
Our boys found they loved snowboarding during the winter months and we are lucky to have a few hills in our area. Dagmar ski resort has a fun terrain park that my kids love. Lakeridge Ski resort also has a terrain park as well as tubing for those who don’t love to ski!
If cross country skiing is more of your style there are lots of trails around the community you can check out if you have your own gear- Long Sault Conservation area in North Clarington offers a variety of trails for all levels of skiers. Greenwood Conservation area is another great spot for discovering local trails. These are also great hiking trails for those who prefer walking.
We hope some of these activities inspire you to stay warm and active during the winter season!
